For schools to offer surgical technologists courses, in the US they need to be accredited through a commission such as the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools. Sometimes these programs can take nine months, and other programs can take up to two years to fully complete.

Helping the surgeons during the operation is also a critical component of this role and being able to anticipate the needs of the surgeons is important. You have to be able to react quickly and be organized and efficient.
Learning other aspects of this position will included what needs to be done prior to surgery regarding the operation room as well as the patient’s needs. Post op is just as important, and be able to assist the patient in recovery as well as clean up and restock and sterilize all the equipment before and after all the operations is also part of the job.
